Stitches

After our fun night seeing the lights, we came home and started to settle in.  Zac was having his sippy cup of milk before we put him to bed.  Zac loves to wait outside the bathroom door for us and gives us an excited squeal and big cheeser like he hasn’t seen us all day.  It’s cute.  This time I opened the door and he was leaning on it and fell in, and landed right on his sippy cup.  This was the 3rd fall on the sippy cup in probably 2 weeks.  We picked him up and the blood was gushing.  This time the cut was on the outside of his bottom lip.  And we could see that it was a pretty wide cut.  We debated whether or not to even take him to the doctor or not.  We finally decided that we should probably at least have it looked at and ask for advice on how to treat it.  Hoping not to have to do stitches at all.

I rode in the back with Zac and tried to keep ice on it, but his milk is what calmed him the most.  It stopped bleeding in the car.  We walked into Instacare and were still trying to decide to even go in or not.  SANY0401

Inside the waiting room.  All bloody.  We didn’t even clean him up before we loaded him into the car.  We both decided it would be best to have the doctor check it out.SANY0402-1

After the nurse cleaned him up.  SANY0403-1The first thing the nurse, and then the doctor, and later the ER nurse, and the ER doctor said was that he would definitely need stitches because the cut goes right through where the lip turns red. Apparently, if it isn’t matched up just right, it can leave a pretty disfiguring scar. They said it would affect his smile if it wasn’t stitched up correctly.

At Instacare the doctor explained that it would be very difficult to do stitches on such a little guy on the face without him wiggling and basically refused to do the stitches.  He suggested going to Primary Children’s where they could put him under anesthesia, so that they could be sure to get it to line up just right.  He said that they had a type of anesthesia that isn’t as strong as the normal and wouldn’t knock him completely out, just really relax him.  We have already been nervous about putting him out for his eye surgery if it comes to that.  And now he just split his lip open and they want us to put him out!  WHAT?!  The doctor called down to the ER and found out that they are able to do that kind of anesthesia down there and sent us to the ER.  We were pretty shocked and disappointed that the doctor there was too much of a wimp to even try stitches.

Checking his stats.  He has always been the best little patient.  He sits there and lets them do their thing and just watches closely taking it all in.  Such a good boy!SANY0405

So, after lots of prayer and calling friends for advice and to offer more prayer for wisdom for us to know what was best for Zac, we were off to the ER.  Zac was totally fine by now and I’m sure wondering what we were doing and where we were so late!  He was tired, but such a good boy.

The nurse there was great!  He told us that his daughter had the same thing happen.  She cut her top lip and they were able to just wrangle her down for a few minutes and stitch her up just fine!  WHAT A RELIEF!  He was all about doing it that way, rather than putting him under anesthesia.  And so were we!  Of course, we had to wait to get the doctor’s opinion.  And it was shift change.  So we waited.  And played with dinosaurs.SANY0406SANY0407

And Miss Lucy was a champ!  She didn’t make a peep.  Even when she should have been starving.  I got her fed and she was happy as could be.SANY0408

The nurse that was so good to us said he brought his daughter in and looked just like us.  A bloody mess!  SANY0411

Playing with Daddy… at almost 11:00.  Way past bed time!SANY0414SANY0416

The doctor came and talked with us and was fine wrangling him down and doing the stitches!  Thank you, God!  Prayer answered!

We told the doctor that he finished his milk on the way there.  That really made it so that the anesthesia would have been a bad choice.  We would have had to wait hours before the milk was digested completely.  Otherwise, the risks are much higher for a bad reaction.  We are so glad he had that milk!

Grandpa Milan and Grandma Kelli came out as soon as they heard where we were. They couldn’t resist. It ended up being helpful. They were able to take Lucy while Zac got stitched up. They had told me they would kick me and Lucy out in case she started crying and made Zac more upset while they were trying to keep him still.  I was so glad to be able to be there with Zac and Dad.

The worst part was getting a numbing shot right into the open wound.  Poor little Bubba!  The picture below is the bandaid waiting for the cut to be numb.SANY0417

And then, the papoose.  He had to put his arms into a pillow case to keep them strapped down.  And then strap him down so he couldn’t move.  He did not like this.  It was so sad.  They did unstrap his head while they worked.  They also put a sterile towel over his face and only the lip part was poking out.  That was nice, so he couldn’t see the doc going in with the needle!  He cried the whole time, but it was quick and the doctor did great!  The ER team was so much better than Instacare! All done!  And he has such beautiful, luscious lips that you can’t even see the stitches!SANY0419SANY0420Zac fell asleep as soon as we got in the car!  It was a late night!  We are so thankful we didn’t have to put him under anesthesia!  What a blessing!  A few minutes of crying was worth not having to do that!  He is such a tough guy!  It was a rough night for Mom and Dad!  The doctor stitched him up so well!  You can’t even see the scar unless you look real close.  You basically have to stretch his big bottom lip out to even see it at all!
